Why check your sitemap?
Sitemaps rot quietly. CMS regenerations drop pages, stale URLs linger for months, and entries start returning 404s or redirect loops. Search engines waste crawl budget on dead entries — and pages that fell out of your sitemap stop being re-crawled at all.
This checker reads /sitemap.xml on your domain (including sitemap indexes), fetches the listed pages (up to 25 free), and reports:
- Pages found — how many URLs your sitemap declares
- Pages checked — which ones we fetched successfully (up to 25 free)
- Broken pages — URLs in your sitemap that no longer resolve
- Redirecting pages — entries that should be updated to their final URL
Beyond the sitemap
A healthy sitemap isn't the finish line — the links on those pages matter too. Run the full broken link checker to test the links on each scanned page, and the redirect checker to find chains worth shortening.
